last feb we bought 62 acers, im sure some people thought we we nuts to try to farm it, im sure it would be a better turn over if we devoleped it for housing, but.. im one of those die hard farmers who thinks the small farms are fading away.. mostly because of a four letter word WORK. the ground is not the best in the world. an old reclaimed coal strip mine from the 70's no rivers, but to ponds, that have fish. some timber not much, but it our little peice of the woods any way. on top of the mt. 20 acers are flat. but very rough from the years of people four wheeling on the site, always use seat belt on tractor! over growen brush, and moss.. im sure some are saying that it wont work, but i rasie mules, so that says alot about"when i put my mind to something.. it will happen. not sturbon but determained! LOL my husband calls me a hard headed woman.. well yeah i guess he's right! this summer, we have cleaned and cleared, built a 8 acer fence,, and this week end we broke ground for the blueberries!!! what a beauiful site{to me any way} long rows pulled on one end of the feild.. fresh soil smell.. i guess you have to be a farmer to enjoy that.. to day we are composting the site of the berry beds.. berrys will be here in a few a days.. |

Welcome, from one hard-headed woman to another! It certainly does take determination and work, but you've found a group of kindred spirits here. |

Hey Brownule, where are you farming? You said you're on a reclaimed coal mine so I figured you must be in my neck of the woods - Appalachia. Im in the Blue Ridge mtns in VA...Welcome to Newfarm and best of luck with your land. You're doing a good thing.

well howdy neighbor! LOL yes im in west virginia, its nice to meet every one here.you know i thought that there would be some programs out there to help some one with this kind of land making it productive.. but i have banged my head against the wall many time searching.. came up with nothing.. USDA, no programs to help since it was not a farm and does not have a problem ,{erosion due to live stock etc..} what a bummer. so im doing it on my own.gonna have to work an extra job to suport my "farm habit" LOL.. we mulched the blueberry rows yesterday.this week end fence it off. my big ol mule would love a twiggy snack, and make short work of the new plants.. take care all, Rose |

blue berry up date.. we got our rows pulled, have been composting them with oak leaves for nieghbor hood, and cleaned out my compost piles that had been work since last winter..now i have to start mixing the goodies back in for next spring use.. havent got fence around the berry field yet. was gonna do that yesterday but it rained a lot so i just would make a mess driving thru the field. i called pense nursery this eve. to ck about delivery on plants they will be shipped next monday, should get them thursday... i hope i have semi decent weather to set the plants out , i still have to find some really old sawdust to top mulch. im worried that with the old barn dirt it might raise the alkaline up .. trying to keep that happy balance. furrior is comming to day to trim mule feet girls are getting a pedicure,,feild is a mess with all the rain. so is the big barn. working on a game plan..i hope it dont rain till were done.. later all Rose |

greetings from a chillie wva. berry plants havent make it yet, called the nursery it had been to warm to ship them but should be here soon. got the fence up around the berry feild,im trying ribbon wire.. look goog any way.. hopefull with the movment it will keep the deers out.. well see. got the mules feet done. they all look good im sure thay feel better now. the land we bought has a resident at one side who is a nut case! for real, she has 2 acers,i bourder around 2 sides of her..got a letter from her lawyer,to my lawyer, she refusses to move her things{wood pile, turttle coral} she is trying to pull squaters rights and take this section of land..said she wont sue me if i let her use it.. the previous land owner gave her permission to use the land. so her claiming it wont stand up in court.you cant talk to her she flips out. im tired of trying . i have decided if i have any thing to say to her ill let my lawyer tell her..it amazes me how some people can steal and cheat there way to other peoples belongings, she knew this land was up for sale no before i did {years} she just was to get it free like she got the 2 acers she lives on now..winter comming i have nothing better to but go to court. so i guess well see what happens.. pig farmming is looking real good! LOL later R |

Brownmule, Does WVa have an agricultural easement program? That can provide funds for you, place your property in protected status, and "never" let the land be developed-- as in shopping centers and subdivions. Also, check with your conservation easement group-- that could help provide a way to get the squatter off your property. And, the squatter has to have been taxes on the property she is sitting on---- if not, may I suggest an eviction notice? or a large bill for past due rent!!! I hope the property was surveyed when you bought it-- if not, get that done and get your boundaries marked! |

Terry, yes the proptery was survayed before we bought it, i bought the survay from the company, people before us was looking at it and had it survayed but then couldnt get the $ up to buy it, so i made the company an offer and bought it for half price, the squarter's lawyer says the survay means nothing! i didnt pay 5 grand for nothing!, ill ck about keeping land from beeing devloped by companys thing.there was some talk last year of such a thing.people were all shook up about it with good reason, still waiting on her lawyer responce about evict or court! thats so crazy!but im not rolling over and giving her 6 acres,i may going in to pig farmming in stead of mules LOL {just kidding} i just want to raise some berries and my little donkeys.. not make the earth glow! some where i seen some mention of right to farm bill, but i cant seem to find it.i have been every where in WVa laws and codes. but it out there some where maybe there some thing there to help me. ill keep ya posted... Hello, Brownmule.
Have you been to this site?
http://www.farmlandinfo.org/west-virginia/
There is a menu that will get you to the legislative pages, under "Law" - a bit of a slog, but maybe you can find some contact information for someone who can tell you specifically what you need to know for your situation. |

windsinger, thanks for the link! ill ck it out looks like i may need to add it to my favs..
last week we worked on the tire dump 2 days, got 160 to the recycler. EPA had a REAP program, for rimmless tires. then i found a company that will take the rim ones .. we piles up 498 tires(for real!) still have aout 200 to go once collected to the pick up site i will call them to pick them up. talk about comming home dirty and tired, we all looked like coal minners! there was 7 of us working on that mess, we had ppl in the pit, 4 wheller draging them up hill to tractor, tractor draging 30 or so at a time to the "pick up "site. worked from 9 to 9. you know you got good friends when they show up to help with something like that! but we are the same way,no matter how hard or how filthy you get, if you need help we there! thats the way it should be. i feel so much beter about the tire thing, at least the DNR wont be dancing all over me for that! LOL |
