Magdalena Esquit, 75. My father had a small parcel of land on which he grew corn and beans - the three types of corn - white, yellow, and blue. I liked all three. We made atole de maize (a thick beverage, like farina). We also made tortillas de elote (tortillas from the corn in the sweet milk stage), with cinnamon in it. We also ate the cane of the corn before ear-filling. (It is peeled like sugar cane, and is sweet.) This we had as our sweets. My father would bring it home for us. I had ten babies, two survived. Flu and scarcity of food were the reasons they died. I wove to make some money. |
