A Guatemalan Coffee Story

Tipica varieties
Francisco Sajquiy with a tipica variety coffee plant. Francisco's small farm, less than one acre, is typical of the smallholder coffee growers around Lake Atitlan, where the average size is 1/2 acre. A half acre yields about 2,400 pounds. At the current rate of $7 per 100 pound sack, that's $168 per year. The cost of production on a half acre is around $215. It's no wonder farmers are ripping out their coffee plants.
