First I would like to say I enjoy all of your post on whats happening on your farms, I really look foward to Hilltops posts. I am starting to plan for next year, as I hope to grow for market and work, your insights are very helpful. I have been growing different veggies to see what works, my question is what can I plant now as a late season crop here in Michigan?

Thanks.

Mike,
You could plant beans, summer squash, cukes might make it if you have a good fall. Peas, lettuce, turnips, and swiss chard would be o.k., even if you wait a week or two.

Hi Mike, I'm really happy that someone is able to "enjoy the ride", so to speak! I don't know what zone you are in, but I'm guessing 5/6. You still have time for beets, all the different varieties of greens, such as kale, collards, and chard, beans, and don't forget to make a planting of garlic to be ready for next year. I'm so busy my head is spinning. For example~I have to leave my house for the real job at 2:30 in the afternoon. Well, today at 2:00 I was still finishing up this week's newsletter, and then had to run out and pick beets and squash to take with me, which needed to be washed and dried. Make sure the dogs have water, do I have my keys, where's my lunch bag, and pray that I remembered to put gas in the truck. Whew! I usually arrive at my unit with my earrings in one hand and hairbrush in the other ('cause my hair is every-which-way), bags hanging from both arms, yelling "I'm here", at exactly 3:15. But you know, nothing beats the pride I feel when I have a few quiet moments and I think about how 3 short years ago, all I had was a dream. And now I'm living it! Best of luck to you, and I look forward to reading your daily journal!

Thanks Mark and Hilltop, I will work on planting what I still can find here thats available. I would like to try some of the greens, I do have some beans, and I would like to find some peas. Hilltop are you able to email your newsletter? I would love to see it.

Hi Mike,

The one bit of advice I've learned over the last 3 years on my property is, make sure you have the animal housing ready _before_ you get the animals. Otherwise, you end up wasting time setting up temporary living quarters for them (e.g. my front enclosed porch!) Now not only did I take up time setting them up on the porch, I need to sand it down and repaint (some day). Animals also take up a lot of time with chores: I spend 30 to 45 minutes in the morning doing chores and another 30 at night. If I did it all again, I think I might have skipped the animals and concentrated on the garden.

Good luck with your fall veggies...
