Covered up: A look at no-till options
Nomad’ broccoli planted no-till into a flail-mowed summer legume cover (right) shows similar vigor to broccoli planted in a conventionally tilled bed (left). Both beds were managed organically. A low-growing mix of creeping red fescue and dwarf perennial ryegrass, planted in the alleys between beds (center), suppresses weeds and stabilizes the bed, and requires only two or three mowings a season. Broccoli planted August 20, photographed September 30.
