Sudex produces tremendous biomass and releases allelopathic substances, which suppress weeds during crop growth and for some weeks thereafter. Morse and his colleagues are looking at sudex as an organic alternative to broad spectrum herbicides and intensive tillage for cleaning up weedy fields. This stand, planted on July 27 into a moderately-fertile river bottom soil, reached a height of six feet in just 60 days.
