June 16, 2005: Thanks to a partnership with Berks Technical Institute in Wyomissing, Penn., The Rodale Institute is one big step closer to making available complete technical drawings for the No-Till + project's cover crop roller.
On Wednesday, June 15, technical drawing students Miguel Villegas, Candace Parvus, Devin White and Venus Daniel and faculty members Ken Hochberg and Erik Angel came to the Institute to deliver their completed drawings of the roller.
Midway through a two-year associate's degree course in technical drafting, the students took on the project as team and said they were pleased to get experience working on a real-world problem with a tangible outcome.
"Almost everything else we've done has been out of the book," said Venus Daniel, 19, who lives about 10 minutes away from the Institute. "The best thing was seeing it all come together."
TRI farm manager Jeff Moyer expressed gratitude on the part of the Institute for the excellent work the students had done. The process of creating the drawings also generated some refinements and simplifications in the roller's design, he noted—small but important steps toward streamlining production of the tool.
In the coming weeks, Moyer and the BTI team will continue to work together to make digital versions of the drawings available to potential fabricators and the general public.
